Ladies - The Wilson Cup – a round robin competition - 2023Report of The Wilson Cup – a round robin competition Held 2nd July at Bradshaw Bowling Club It is the first time in my memory that a Bolton & District Bowling Competition has been held at this Green and many thanks to all the Ladies from the Club for acting as excellent hosts with particular mention to Jan Corlett and Kathleen Hadjinicolaou who could not do enough to ensure we had an enjoyable and successful day. Thanks to the ladies who organised the catering and those who provided copious supplies of refreshments on the day. Thank you to all the ladies who assisted me with marking and pegging and a big Thanks to Jean Naughton for officiating the Final game. Again, the weather was kind to us and this does make a difference to our enjoyment of the day. The Bolton Iron Man Challenge was on the same day and I have made a mental note not to pick this same Sunday for future competitions. There was some excellent bowling on a fairly tricky green. (I kept the scorecards for the quarter finals onwards but used them at the Fred Bridges Pairs and have accidentally thrown them away. So, the parings from the quarter finals onwards are from memory. Ladies, please put me right if I have any of them incorrect) There were 17 entrants to the round Robin with three Groups of Four and one Group of 5 with the runner up and winner of each Group going through to the next stage. In all stages all bowlers had 8 blocks each. The Quarter Finals Jan Corlett v Jan Wilding Kath Hadjinicolaou v Mary Southern Susan Worsley v Elaine Norris Rita Dunn v Lisa Blackburn Semi Finals Jan Corlett v Kath Hadjinicolaou Susan Worsley v Rita Dunn Finalists Kath Hadjinicolaou v Susan Worsley Congratulations to myself as Runner-up but better Congratulations to Kath Hadjinicolaou the victor in a very close contest. And a personal thanks to Kath for gifting me her presentation of the winner’s flowers. Ladies - The Fred Bridges Pairs Competition - 2023Report of the Fred Bridges Pairs competition 30th July 2023 at Moss Bank Park
We have fewer teams in the League than we have had in the past and we also did not have representation from three clubs. That being said we had 26 entrants and it was really nice to see some ladies that are new to competitions in the Bolton and District. I had to change the format for the pairings this year. In the past we have always tried to pair up an A section player with a B section player. This year however we only have one section. I ranked all players on their averages earned this season and drew a line after the person at number 13. We then had a draw with a player from the top half of the rankings being drawn with a player from the lower half of the rankings. I had some good feedback on this methodology and intend to use the same method for this competition in future years. Hopefully doing the draw in this way will encourage new bowlers and those with lower averages to enter and enjoy the competition. This year it also produced two new winners. Grateful thanks to all the ladies at Moss Bank Park who always act as perfect hosts and thank you for the catering. Thanks to all the ladies who did pegging and marking and particular thanks to Kath Hadjinicolaou in helping me and Maria in keeping the games flowing. With the numbers present we managed to play the competition on a single green and this opens up the opportunity to play on different greens in future years. It will be my intention to pick greens that have the ability to take a 5th block to allow flexibility if the numbers are higher or the weather is not so good. Those early to bowl had some drizzle but on the whole for most of the day we remained dry. The competition was run as a round robin with two groups of 4 pairs and one group of 5 pairs with the 5 groups position being taken after three rounds to decide who was going through to the next round. The pairing with the most wins goes through and if a tie then the pairing with the most points goes through. All bowlers had three blocks each (6 per pair) Due to time constraints, we went from the group stage straight to the semi-final. You will see from the following scores that the Semi Finals were hotly contested. Thanks to Jean Naughton and Alison Duncan for officiating the semi final and to Maria Higgins for officiating the Final. Semi Finalists Lisa Blackburn/Susan Hilton 12 v Susan Worsley/Ann Molamphey 11 Janet Gleave/Sue Foxcroft 10 v Linda Yates/Sue Banks 9 Final Lisa Blackburn/Susan Hilton 12 v Janet Gleave/Sue Foxcroft 6 A big congratulations to the WINNERS Lisa Blackburn and Susan Hilton both brand new names to go on the trophy. Ladies - The President's Cup - 2023REPORT OF THE PRESIDENTS CUP 21st May 2023 held at Dunscar Conservative Club First of all, I would like to compliment Dunscar Conservative Club who have made some wonderful improvements to the Club House, the outside seating areas and green surrounds and the Green itself was in excellent condition. I would highly recommend the facilities to anyone wishing to arrange a bowling competition. 25 Ladies entered the competition and a good day of bowling was had by all with the weather being excellent for so early in the season. Thanks go to all the ladies who helped with the raffle, pegging, marking and a special thank you to the ladies of Dunscar who looked after us admirably all day keeping us fed and quenched with an excellent choice of food. I was so impressed with how our day went at Dunscar. It is on my priority list to return again for one of our competitions in 2024. A big thank you to Jean Naughton for officiating the Final.
