The Bob Newlan Memorial Trophy is a knock-out competition, open to all the evening teams. It is played for on Sunday Mornings (except for the first round). Teams receive a handicap, based on the division they play in (10 chalks per division between the two teams in a match). The previous year’s winner is penalised 10 chalks.
The trophy is named after the last secretary, and was instituted in 1996. It replaced the Dineley Shield, which had been played for since the early days of the League. The old shield had in any case become full of winners’ names, so when there was a general desire to remember Bob after his unexpected death, this seemed the obvious choice.
There has been some confusion as to how the rules for this competition are to be interpreted. There is a detailed commentary available.
The draw for the 2010 competition is shown below. The first three rounds are played on Tuesday evenings, starting at 6.30pm (7.00pm at venues with floodlights). The semi-finals and final are played on Sunday mornings, starting at 11.00am.
